2. The Golden Question (“Follow the Data”)

The Concept: Business owners often don’t know what can be automated. You have to trace their workflow manually.

The Execution: Ask the Golden Question: “Walk me through step-by-step: what happens the exact second a new lead signs up on your website?”

The Goal: Listen for the human bottlenecks—the moments where data stops moving until a human touches it.
3. The Three Red Flags

The Concept: While the client is talking, you are actively listening for these three automation triggers:

Copy & Paste: “Then my assistant copies their email into our CRM…”

The Delay: “Usually, we try to get back to them by the next morning…”

Repetitive Writing: “I spend about two hours a day drafting proposals…”

4. Quantifying the Pain

The Concept: Before you solve the problem, you must get the client to admit how much it is costing them.

The Execution: Ask, “How many hours a week does your team spend doing that manual data entry?” If they say 10 hours a week, you now have the ammunition to prove your automation will save them 40 hours a month.

“Welcome back, architects. In Lesson 1, we learned that we need to sell outcomes, not software. But how do you actually know what outcome a business needs?
If you walk into a meeting and just guess what they want, you are going to lose the deal. Before you can prescribe the medicine, you have to diagnose the pain. Today, I am going to teach you how to conduct an ‘Automation Audit.’ This is the exact framework you will use to interview business owners and uncover the hidden bottlenecks that are bleeding their revenue.”
Point 1: The Detective Mindset & The Golden Question
“When you get on a Zoom call or sit down in a boardroom, you need to adopt the Detective Mindset. Your job is not to pitch in the first fifteen minutes. Your job is to ask questions and listen.
Business owners rarely know what can be automated. So, you have to ask them the Golden Question. You look at them and say: ‘Walk me through your process step-by-step. What happens the exact second a new lead fills out the form on your website?’ Then, you sit back, shut your mouth, and follow the data.”
Point 2: The Three Red Flags
“While they are talking, you are listening for the human bottlenecks. I call these the Three Red Flags.
Number one: Copy and Paste. If the CEO says, ‘My assistant takes the email and puts it into a spreadsheet,’ that is a red flag. That is an integration platform’s job.
Number two: The Delay. If they say, ‘We usually review the leads and get back to them the next morning.’ That is a red flag. That is an AI Agent’s job.
Number three: Repetitive Writing. ‘I spend three hours a day typing up custom proposals.’ Red flag. That is a generative AI’s job.
Every time you hear one of these flags, you just found a workflow you can build and sell.”
Point 3: Quantifying the Pain
“But here is the masterstroke. Before you say, ‘I can fix that,’ you have to quantify the pain.
If they tell you about a manual copy-paste process, you ask, ‘How many hours a week is your team spending on that?’ Let them answer. If they say 10 hours a week, they just admitted to wasting 40 hours a month on a task a robot can do in two seconds.
You have just established the value of your service. You aren’t just selling a neat tech trick; you are giving them back a full week of payroll every single month.”
